10 Ways To Be A Winner: Dj of the Year Competition Insights from Marcello Pedalino

10 Ways To Be A Winner: Dj of the Year Insights from Marcello Pedalino with Pascal Levesque, Adam Weitz, Steve Mood, Jazmine Gonzalez Bumpass, Darryl Jake Jacobsen, Jack Bermeo, Vinny Liotta

As a judge for the Dj of the Year competition at the Taj Mahal in Atlantic City, I’ve been asked by a few of the finalists what it takes to win our industry’s coveted title. In the interest of full disclosure and fairness to all 12 competitors, I thought it might be best to share my insights with everyone- based on my experience of being on both sides of the score card.

Here we go;

1) Nail your introduction. This is the only element of the evening that you can actually control. There is no excuse to not have it mastered by competition night. It counts for 20% of your over-all score. Is it scary to perform in front of your peers? Yes. Are fellow entertainers a tough crowd to please? Yes. If you flub a single word or pause unnecessarily for 2 seconds during your delivery will everyone notice? Yes. Will any of that be different this year? No. Tough noogies. Practice your intro until you are dreaming about your intro at night and thinking about your intro when you wake up… then practice it some more. If you get anything less than a perfect score for your intro, there is no one to blame but yourself.

2) Nail your introduction.

3) See #1 and #2

4) Win the crowd over like Pascal. You don’t have to be well-known or a previous winner to do well at the competition. Heck, you don’t even have to be from this country. Bring the goods and a positive attitude and perform your heart out. The crowd and the judges will feel it if you make a genuine connection.

5) Choose the right soundtrack like Vinny. In addition to having the talent and the likeability factor, the music you choose as your background track or performance edit is paramount.

6) Be creative like Adam. You will not find words like ‘predictable,’ ‘boring’ or ‘standard’ in his vocabulary. Let your imagination go and your artistic flair shine. Don’t let the categories of the competition get in your way. If you are impressive, you will leave your mark on the competition above and beyond the plaques that are given out.

7) Be original like Steve. Bring something to the table that has elements of personalization and distinction. And, if you can be humble at the same time like Mr. Moody, you’ll also learn that nice guys can finish first.

Marcello Pedalino, 3-Time Recipient of The DJ TImes DJ of The Year Award8) Be a polished emcee like Jack and don’t scream into the mic. I’m shocked how many seasoned entertainers still do this. The judges want to see you be in the moment, but stay in control like Mr. Bermeo.

9) If you are performing with a team, execute your routine flawlessly like Jazmine. If your dancers are better than you are and just up there for eye candy, it’s going to work against you. Dj of the Year winners are those who fire on all cylinders from every aspect from start to finish.

10) Know your audience like Jake. Give the crowd something awesome and useful that they can wow their clients with at their next event. And, if you do well at the competition, be generous like Mr. Jacobsen and share your ideas with those who contact you afterwards.

Have fun and good luck everyone!

The Special Event industry takes you to some pretty interesting places. From the classiest of country country clubs to the most stunning hotel ballrooms to an upscale adult nightclub complete with a stripper poll… there’s never a dull moment… -and I wouldn’t want it any other way. Always a pleasure to judge the DJ of the Year competition in Atlantic City.  Congrats to Vinny Liotta fom Cool Cat Entertainment for winning the coveted title this year.  He performed a really fun closing routine using Jason Mraz and Otis Day.  Vinny had a natural connection with the crowd and even had the judges into it a “lil” bit too.  🙂

Marcello Pedalino presents- The Two-time DJ of the Year: Jack Bermeo of LJ Productions in The Celebrate Life Series, Episode 16

At a recent keynote presentation by Mike Walter,  author of the book, 10 Things You Can Do To Have  A Better Day, I had the opportunity to ask some of the top entertainers and event producers in New Jersey for some advice that would benefit my clients and anyone else tuning in who was planning a milestone celebration.   This is the 16th episode of MMP’s online video resource, The Celebrate Life series.

These industry rock stars were kind enough to share some advice they’ve given to their clients over the years that helped them have an unforgettable experience filled with exceptional entertainment and hospitality.  This installment of the Celebrate Life series features my good friend, Jack Bermo, from LJ Productions.

I asked Jack how couples can make their wedding receptions more personalized, fun and memorable.   In this interview, you’ll see how Jack’s “style,” energy and ability to ignite a crowd from behind the DJ booth as well as out on the dance floor helps his clients and their guests say “that was an awesome wedding” on their way home.

Bermeo has also made quite an impression on The Mobile Dj Entertainment industry recently.  In 2011 and 2012, he earned the coveted DJ of the Year Award at the DJ Times International DJ Expo in Atlantic City, NJ.   Previous winners include such industry notables as Adam Weitz, Sean “Big Daddy” McKee, Jazmine Gonzalez, Marz Lawhorn, Steve Moody and yours trulyMarcello Pedalino.   Bermeo won the approval of the crowd and judges by infusing a smooth, non-obtrusive Emcee style, stellar song selection,  creative musicality and a little help from the percussive talents of an industry favorite, Crystal Vargas.

Only one entertainer has ever won the DJ of the Year award 3 times.  Jack has the opportunity to earn the Triple Crown as well and rewrite the mobile history books in August of 2013.   Whatever he decides, the MMP team wishes him continued health, happiness and success.

The Celebrate Life Series, Episode 12: Vincent Velasquez of Hurricane Productions- The New Generation

It’s a bird! It’s a plane!! … nope.  It’s Vincent Velasquez, from Hurricane Productions, flying high in the sky thanks to his seemingly effortless and fearless crowd-surfing skills.  Whether it’s at the International DJ of the Year Competition in front of a couple hundred people or down at Rutgers University in front of a couple thousand, the Puerto Rican-Italian entertainer and entrepreneur takes full advantage of the double-whammy confidence, drive and sharp wit that his heritage offers up.    And the crowds love it.   Present company included.

His approach to life and his tech-chic clientele remind me of the vintage commercial and slogan for Pepsi, “The Choice of A New Generation.”    Essentially, anything that was cool more than four days ago is outdated and the only way to survive beyond the cliched trends is to pioneer a new movement.   Along with his uber-talented partner, Strato Doumanis, Hurricane Productions is attracting the energetic and demanding youth who want to celebrate with style.   FYI, you probably noticed that The Celebrate Life Series was recently treated to a sexy production facelift.    Strato and the Hurricane design team created our new video intro and outro stinger.     The feedback has been full of generous praise.

In this 12th episode of The Celebrate Life Series, Velasquez talks about how steady growth, diversification and client accessibility has enabled Hurricane to establish a notable presence in the glitterati-packed Jersey Shore DJ Entertainment and Event Production arena. Vincent reminds brides  about the importance of hiring a company that can offer all of the pre-reception concierge service items necessary to ensure a stress-free experience as well as exceeding your expectations the day of your wedding reception.

Velasquez and I also riffed about a common culinary pleasure and decadent passion...  pizza.  If you’re like me, and think that a great slice is right up there with a great steak or bacon cheeseburger, tune in for Vincent’s south-jersey pie recommendation.  And if you like gag reels,  reminiscent of the old Cannonball Run movie endings, stick around for the final minute of us just having a few laughs.  🙂

These industry rock stars were kind enough to share some advice they’ve given to their clients over the years that helped them have an unforgettable experience filled with exceptional entertainment and hospitality.

The fourth installment of the Celebrate Life series features my good friend, fellow DJ of the Year winner and owner of H.Y.P.E Productions, Jazmine Gonzalez, from Chicago.  In addition to being a super savvy entrepreneur and an extremely talented entertainer, she  has a serious knack for building stellar relationships with her clients.  When you are booking your entertainment company,  seek out a company like H.Y.P.E that strives for a personal connection and a genuine rapport.  You’ll appreciate the results the day of your event and in the years to come.   That’s a great tip.  icon smile The Celebrate Life Series: Episode #2 – Mike Walter from Elite Entertainment says, Forget the Lyrics
