Zumba, A Latin-Inspired Dance-Fitness Class

Hats off to Darryl Jacobsen, President of the New Jersey Disc Jockey Network.  Since his first days in office, he’s secured some of the biggest names in the mobile entertainment industry to speak to our group and also arranged for some very topical issues to be presented for our personal and professional benefit.

This month’s meeting was a great example.  Jake asked fellow mobile entrepreneur and NJDJN member,  Betsy Fischer, to host an evening at her new dance studio, The Groove Lounge, in Voorhees, NJ.

Betsy Fischer, Zumba Instructor and Owner of the Groove Lounge

Betsy shared her inspirational success  story without sugar-coating the rise to the top.  We all appreciated her openness and real-world account of what it takes to open and run a busy studio.  She shared all of the logistical and financial pros and cons with regards to state inspections, marketing campaigns, and monthly maintenance requirements.  Like many in attendance, I really appreciated her candor and was reminded of how much more it takes to open a new business than simply putting up a “We’re Open” sign.

Betsy and the NJDJN Shakin' Their Groove Thing

After her mini Wharton School of Business-like presentation, we all found out why Betsy wanted us to “dress comfortably and bring a bottle of water.”   It was time for Zumba! Fischer, a certified intructor, had the NJDJN dancing and sweating for the next forty-five minutes.  The best part… we all had a blast!  In case you’re out of the gym scene or don’t read  any of the Health and Wellness magazines out there, Zumba is known as “The Exercise in Disguise!” Essentially, it’s a Latin-inspired dance-fitness class that incorporates spicy rhythms and international beats.  In our session, the music programming included salsa, merengue, reggaeton and even a Jewish hora.

It was obvious that Fischer had a background in entertainment as an Emcee.  Her other venture of ten years, Party Dancing with Betsy Fischer, LLC, was apparent in her ability to keep us all motivated and engaged throughout the class, never once losing her smile or enthusiasm.

The meeting ended with dinner, a re-cap discussion and lots of laughs.  It was a great night.

Special thanks to Betsy for her hospitality and for sharing her talents and experiences with us.

Betsy and her staff continue to entertain at Bar and Bat Mitzvahs, Weddings, Birthday Parties, Sweet Sixteens, School Events, Fundraisers, and Corporate Events at venues throughout New Jersey and Pennsylvania.  Her new studio can be booked for private dance instruction, local gatherings, milestone celebrations, and of course, some awesome Zumba classes!

Atlantic City, NJ —  Kudos to the competitors and congratulations to the all the winners of the 2010 DJ of the competition.

Contestants competed on the Casbah night club stage in front of their industry colleagues this past summer at the Trump Taj Mahal Hotel and Casino.

Adam Weitz, from A-Sharp Production, a big supporter of the NJDJN, was awarded the coveted title of 2010 Dj of the Year for thinking outside the box and performing a situational routine that wow’d the crowd and impressed the judges.

This quote, taken from Adam’s website, shows his enthusiasm for originality and dedication to his craft… “With my experience in entertainment, I bring color and excitement to you. We create each affair to be original & special. I take my career seriously because I love what I do! We only reserve the very best in entertainment. Having fun and making it memorable is the most important formality. This is my dedication to you.”

Earlier that week, MMP founder, Marcello Pedalino, and other previous winners of the DJ of the Year Competition, were recognized for their accomplishments and contributions to the mobile entertainment industry.

Marcello earned the Dj of the Year title in 2001, 2002 and 2006 and then received the ADJA’s Peter Merry Leadership award in 2008.

To Life, To Life! The Rosen Family Doubles-up on the Mozel Tov for Mark & Jillian’s B’nai Mitzvah at The Brooklake Country Club

Do you remember that vintage commercial jingle for Doublemint Gum?  “Double your pleasure, double your fun?”  Well, Laura and Neil Rosen did exactly that for their  children by combining both of their simchas and making them one big celebration!

The traditional festivities at The Brooklake included a heartfelt dual toast from Neil, an all-inclusive candlelighting tribute in which each adult table had their own flame to ignite, and beautiful parent’s dance selections from Tim McGraw (My Little Girl) and Rascal Flatts (My Wish).

The entertainment features we provided included some of the most popular cocktail hour interactives offered by MMPThe Interactive Game Show, Papparazzi and DJ Hero. It’s not easy to keep 100 kids entertained and out of trouble for over an hour, but with proper planning, a great crew and the right activities, everyone has a great time and gets warmed-up for the main event!

Mark & Jiilian’s reception was a blast.  When both guests of honor like to dance, it’s contagious.  And usually, the apple (or apples in this case) don’t fall far from the tree.  Mom and dad were shakin’ their groove thing to some of their requests like; Brown Eyed Girl, Ain’t No Mountain High Enough and Dancing In The Dark.  Mark & Jillian had us playing all of the current hits like; California Girls, I Like It, and 2012.

One of the many highlights of the event came courtesy of Grandma, the sweetest apple of the bunch.  Laura’s mom, Sylvia Gesser, who just celebrated her 94th birthday, was boppin’ her head to the beat and doing her own funky dance moves with a big smile on her face from start to finish.  When we played the MMP staple, “Hey Baby, (I Want To Know- Would You Be My Girl),” me and the fellas were drawn right to Grandma’s feet to give her the serenade she deserved.  It was awesome.  Mike Leta, professional photographer, captured the moment to a tee.

Special thanks to Mike for sharing his photos for this entry and to The Brooklake Country Club for their hospitality and professionalism.
